Beating the Flood: A Patient Recovery at Harleyford Marina

Collecting a boat isn’t always about the mechanical challenge; sometimes, it’s a battle against the elements. Recently, the Boatbreakers team completed a long-awaited recovery at the beautiful Harleyford Marina on the River Thames. The vessel, a classic river cruiser, had reached a point where her owner decided to prioritise responsible recycling over further neglect.

The Challenge of a Thames Winter

While we usually aim for a swift turnaround, this collection required a heavy dose of patience. The River Thames saw exceptionally high water levels and fast-flowing currents over the winter months due to record-breaking rainfall. With Red Boards and navigation warnings in place, moving any vessel, especially one that had been somewhat neglected, was deemed too dangerous by the river authorities.

We maintained close contact with the owner and the marina team for several months, waiting for the river to settle. Safety is always our primary concern, and we never risk a vessel or a team member when the river is in such a volatile state.

Seamless Logistics at Harleyford

Once the water levels finally dropped and the “all clear” was given, the team at Harleyford Marina swung into action. They expertly towed the cruiser across the river from her mooring and brought her to the hoist.

Our specialised lorry was waiting on the hardstanding, ready to receive the boat. The transition from the Thames to the road was seamless, marking the end of the boat’s time on the river and the beginning of her recycling journey at our yard.

A Responsible Choice

The owner’s decision to scrap the boat rather than letting her sink or deteriorate further is a commendable one. Neglected boats can quickly become environmental hazards, especially during floods. By choosing Boatbreakers, he ensured the hull will be processed correctly and any salvageable materials diverted from landfill.

Do you have a cruiser on the Thames that has become too much to manage? Whether the sun is shining or the river is rising, Boatbreakers is your partner for professional boat disposal.
