Shell Island Boat Collection: Beating the Tide to Recycle a Colvic Traveller 28
Against the Tide: The High-Stakes Colvic Traveller 28 Recovery at Shell Island
At Boatbreakers, we are used to tight schedules, but our recent mission to Shell Island in North Wales took the definition of “deadline” to a whole new level. We were tasked with collecting a Colvic Traveller 28 for recycling. A sturdy motor cruiser that had reached the end of its service life. However, the geography of the location meant this was far from a standard pickup.
The Race Against the Causeway
Shell Island is famous for its rugged beauty and its tidal causeway. Access to the island is entirely dependent on the Irish Sea. When the tide comes in, the road disappears. For our recovery driver, the mission was a race against the clock. We had a narrow window to get our lorry across the causeway, load the boat, and depart before being stranded by the rising waters.
The Two-Day Window
The logistical pressure didn’t stop at the tide. The boat yard on Shell Island only has a crane on-site for two days out of the entire year. There was no room for error or mechanical delay. If we missed that specific crane window, the Colvic would have been stuck for another six months. Accruing storage fees and deteriorating further.
Despite the pressure, the Boatbreakers team coordinated perfectly with the island’s yard crew. The Colvic Traveller 28 was hoisted and secured onto our lorry. With the boat safely strapped down, our driver navigated back across the causeway just as the tide began to reclaim the road.
A Successful Retirement
The Colvic Traveller 28 was a popular choice for coastal cruising, but this particular hull was ready for decommissioning. Now safely back at our yard, she will be processed through our recycling facility. We will salvage any reusable internal fittings and hardware to support the circular marine economy before the hull is responsibly recycled.
