New Legislation For Soft Furnishings Disposal
Environment Agency Waste Guidance
In August 2022, the environment agency issued guidance on legal requirements for the collection and disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating. Due to the assumed presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in both the textiles and foam found in this type of waste.
The advice stated that from the 1st of January 2023 upholstered domestic seating containing POPs must not be: Land filled, contaminate other non-POPS, containing wastes, reused or recycled.
What does this mean for you?
We must now handle this type of waste in a strict way. Resulting in the cost of handling and disposal drastically changing. For clarity, the guidance relates to the following items , sofas, armchairs, beanbags, office, chairs, stalls dining chairs, or cushions. This obviously affects the soft furnishings inside of your boat so if your boat has a set of cushions. We will need to know you are more than welcome to remove these cushions before we collect your Scrap Boat to avoid any additional charges.
Additional Costs
To give you an idea of costs for a large POPS item like a sofa or an armchair. The extra charge would be £50 per item, obviously inside a boat that won’t be items as large as a sofa or as heavy, however, even the small POPS items are charged at £25 per item so it can add up fast.
Another item that can add additional charges to the scrap price for your boat is car tyres. If the boat is still on a trailer and the tyres go in with the waste there is an additional charge of £15 per tyre. So once again, if you can remove tyres from the trailers, it can save you some money.
