Giving a Westerly Griffon a Second Life: Recycling and Salvage in Gosport
Every boat has a lifespan, and sometimes even a beloved classic reaches the end of the line. Recently, the Boatbreakers team handled the recycling of an old Westerly Griffon yacht. Before reaching out to us, the owner exhausted every possible option. First, he tried to sell her, and then he tried to give her away for free. Unfortunately, with no luck on either front, he decided on one final voyage.
Sailing to Gosport for Recycling
Rather than leaving the yacht to rot on a mooring, the determined owner sailed her all the way from her home port in Hythe down to our base in Gosport. Once she arrived safely in Gosport, our team positioned the truck and hoisted her out of the water, preparing her for the dismantling process.
Even though her sailing days were officially over, the Westerly Griffon still had plenty of life left in her individual parts. Instead of sending everything straight to the scrap pile, we carefully stripped down the vessel to salvage as much usable equipment as possible.
A Treasure Trove of Salvage
Fortunately, Westerly yachts are well-built boats, meaning our team managed to rescue a fantastic haul of reusable gear. Among the items we salvaged were:

A complete set of sails
Ultimately, while the hull itself was recycled, this salvage operation was a huge success. Because we pulled all of these great components, most of these items will now go on to help other boat owners keep their own vessels afloat and sailing.
