Not every boat removal goes strictly according to plan on the first try. Sometimes deep keels and transport regulations force you to adapt on the fly. That was certainly the case when Boatbreakers was called out to North Shore Boatyard in Chichester Harbour to clear an unviable Trapper yacht.

The vessel had spent a long stretch sitting out on a Chichester Harbour mooring. Where she seemed to have served more as a basic overnight sleeping space than a working sailboat. Her interior showed signs of live-aboard wear, and her Yanmar diesel engine was completely seized. Deciding it was time to end the ongoing hassle, the owner unstepped the mast himself out on the water before arranging for the new North Shore yard team to haul her ashore.

Unexpected Obstacle

Once she was sitting on the hard, our team arrived with our heavy-duty Hiab lorry for collection. We immediately hit an unexpected height obstacle. This particular Trapper model was built with a very deep fin keel. Sitting up on our truck bed, the combined height pushed past legal road limits. Forcing us to abort the initial lift for safety.

Undeterred, we sent our crew right back to North Shore armed with heavy cutting tools. The team cleared the unstepped mast off the deck. And sliced off every high-standing fitting they could find. Including the steel pulpit and pushpit rails.

Extremely Helpful 

Trimming those vital extra inches brought the overall height down into the legal zone. Our Hiab truck loaded the Trapper up without further issue, and she was brought back to our facility for full dismantling and recycling. the yard team at Northshore were extremely helpful and understanding throughout and made our lives a lot easier.
