Westerly Centaur Boat Disposal in Gosport
Our Boat disposal team had a local job to remove a Westerly Centaur from her mooring in Gosport. The boat had been left untouched for some time and her owner now lived away. We believe that she suffered some damaged during the winter storms. When she was lifted out there was some obvious damage to her rudder and bilge keels.
We have often had to deal with Westerly Centaurs over the years. The Centaur, a 26-foot bilge keel cruising yacht, enjoyed immense popularity from its launch in 1969. Designed by Laurent Giles, it offered a unique combination of spacious accommodation and shallow draft capabilities, making it ideal for exploring tidal waters and estuaries.
Its robust construction and reliable sailing performance contributed to its reputation as a sturdy and dependable cruiser. The Centaur’s spacious interior, featuring a separate forward cabin, saloon, and galley, made it a comfortable vessel for extended cruising.
The bilge keel design allowed the Centaur to stand upright on drying moorings, opening up a wider range of cruising grounds. Over 2,500 Westerly Centaurs were built, making it one of the most successful production yachts of its era. Its enduring popularity stems from its practicality, affordability, and suitability for family cruising, cementing its place as a classic British yacht.
With the damage she had coupled with the an incomplete engine it isn’t a boat we want to offer for re-sale or re-homing. She was stripped down for any useful parts and then sent to our boat scrapyard for dismantling.
