Streamlining the Solent: A Westerly Centaur Recovery from Whale Island

The Westerly Centaur is perhaps the most famous British production yacht ever built. With over 2,500 made, they are a common sight in the Solent, but even these “indestructible” bilge-keelers eventually reach the end of their sailing life. Recently, the Boatbreakers team was called to Whale Island in Portsmouth Harbour to assist an owner looking for a swift, professional exit strategy.

The Harbour Crossing

The mission began at Whale Island, the home of HMS Excellent. The owner had decided to give up his mooring and wanted the boat moved immediately to avoid further costs and administrative hurdles. Our team successfully prepared the Centaur for a short tow across the busy waters of Portsmouth Harbour.

Navigating through the naval and commercial traffic, we brought the vessel to Gosport Boat Yard. Using the yard’s specialist lifting equipment, we hoisted the Centaur out of her natural element and onto our waiting transport. This “tow-and-lift” approach is often the most efficient way to handle boats located on mid-harbour moorings.

Salvaging a Legend

Westerlys were built to last, and while this hull was ready for recycling, many of her components still had years of service left. At Boatbreakers, we prioritise the marine circular economy, ensuring that usable parts don’t end up in a landfill. From this Centaur, we successfully salvaged:

  • The Marine Engine: A robust Volvo Penta unit that will be serviced and prepared for resale.

  • The Rudder: A high-demand replacement part for the thousands of Centaurs still sailing.

  • Deck Hardware: Various cleats, winches, and stainless steel fittings.

A Swift Solution

By choosing Boatbreakers, the owner achieved exactly what he set out to do: he cleared his mooring, avoided future maintenance liabilities, and ensured his boat was decommissioned responsibly.

If you have a vessel on a mooring in Portsmouth or Gosport that you need removed quickly and professionally, get in touch. We turn a logistical headache into a seamless recovery.
