The 50-Year Garden Catamaran: A Bittersweet Boatbreakers Farewell
The Garden Catamaran: A 50-Year Landmark Sets Sail
At Boatbreakers, we see all kinds of vessels, but every so often, we encounter a story that truly defines the “unfinished project.” Recently, our team was called to a residential property to dismantle two 28ft wooden catamaran hulls that had become a local legend in their own right.
Purchased in the late 1970s for approximately £8,000,a significant sum at the time, these hulls were the beginning of a dream. The owner had planned to build his own ocean-going vessel right there in his front garden. However, as often happens with ambitious builds, life got in the way. For five decades, the wooden structures sat side-by-side, never once tasting salt water.
For the neighbours, these hulls weren’t just wood and fibreglass; they were a permanent fixture of the street’s identity for fifty years.
Awkward Removal
Following the owner’s passing, his family faced the difficult task of clearing the property to prepare it for sale. At 28ft long, the hulls were awkward to move in one piece without specialised transport that the condition of the wood simply wouldn’t allow. That’s where Boatbreakers stepped in.
As our team began the process of cutting the hulls into manageable sections, a small crowd gathered. Neighbours who had lived next to the “garden boats” for decades came out to say a final goodbye. Many shared stories of seeing the owner working on them years ago, noting that the street would feel strangely empty without its most famous landmarks.
Final Clearance
While it’s always sad to see a maritime dream end this way, our team worked efficiently to clear the site, allowing the family to move forward. It was a poignant reminder that while not every boat makes it to the water, they can still leave a lasting impression on dry land.
