Flush Poker 27 (GIB’SEA) Collected for Disposal in Marchwood

Flush Poker 27 from Marchwood

Boatbreakers were in Marchwood to collect and dispose of a Flush Poker 27. The marine and boat recycling journey for this boat went full circle. We had initially come across this boat back in 2023 when we had been asked to quote on disposal in Gosport. After seeing the boat we suggested to the owner that she would probably sell instead. She was actually one of the first boats we put through the Lonely Boats route and she quickly sold.

Her new owners then moved her to Marchwood (near Southampton). Over the next couple of years he used the boat but in May of this year he himself contacted us to scrap the boat. She had become too much of a project for him and he wasn’t finding the time to complete her. Coupled with having another boat he didn’t want to leave her to rot in the yard.

Boat Items to Salvage

As we knew the Flush Poker 27 from before we had an idea on what items we could salvage from her. Among the items we managed to recover were a Gas powered Heater, Winches, Cooker, Yanmar 1GM10 Engine with panel and loom and various deck fittings. Her fuel was removed by the owner and was given to another boat owner in the club. The same with the gas bottles that were on board.

All of the metal items on board were removed and recycled. Including the mast which was aluminium with some stainless fittings and her Iron fin keel. Her internal wood was stripped out and sent for recycling. Wood recycling significantly benefits the environment by preserving trees and mitigating the negative impacts of deforestation, such as air and water pollution. This process diverts wood waste from landfills, giving new life to a versatile natural resource.

Recycled wood finds its way into a wide array of products. It’s transformed into domestic furnishings like tables, chairs, and ornaments, and repurposed for panel boards used in decking, lofts, and even art canvases. Lower-quality wood is often converted into mulches, composts, and coverings that enrich soil, while excess wood can be used as biomass for energy production. Additionally, recycled wood creates landscape surfaces for gardens, agricultural areas, pathways, and children’s playgrounds.

Energy Recovery

Once the Flush Poker 27 was down to just the fibreglass hull she was crushed, shredded and sent for energy recovery. This means that the waste will be diverted from Landfill. Although sending the waste for energy recovery isn’t considered a recycling option it does have the benefit of creating energy for the national grid.

If you have an old boat like the Flush Poker 27 then get in contact. Our team can work out a plan to get the boat recycled and salvage what we can for other boat owners.

At Boatbreakers we always like the change of scenery of chopping up a boat on site as they usually mean visiting an interesting place where you wouldn't expect a boat to be. Often it will be a garden and we'll hear stories of how the owner has always planned to finish the project and go sailing but one thing led to another until we arrived with a disc cutter.
