Our Boatbreakers team were in Blyth for a boat disposal mission this week. We had been asked to collect and dispose of a Soling 27. The old fin keel yacht was sat on a trailer in the boat yard. We had hoped that the trailer might be in reasonable enough condition to tow with. However the owner confirmed that it wouldn’t be road safe.
At 27ft the Soling 27 is quite a long boat to have on a trailer. Especially with a large fin keel to contend with. Usually when there is an old unsafe trailer we will simply winch it all up onto a flatbed trailer. Typically the largest trailer we use is 20ft long. So there would be quite a large overhang if we kept her in one piece. To solve this problem we would usually send the Hiab truck to lift the whole lot away. But as Blyth is so far North the extra Hiab costs would have pushed the disposal price unnecessarily high.

After some deliberation our team decided the best course of action would be to cut a section of the boat. This would reduce her overall length and should mean we could fit her on the flatbed trailer.
The Soling 27 owner was happy with this plan and was keen to have the boat out of the yard. Despite the weather forecast looking grim our team were set on our plan. Our team started by cutting the stern from the boat to reduce the lenght by around 3 or 4 feet. Then with the length more manageable it was easier to winch the whole lot up onto the flatbed trailer. The stern section that was removed was then loaded underneath the rest of the boat.

Luckily for us the boat’s trailer had enough strength to be moved around. In the past we have tried that kind of plan but the trailers are in such a poor condition it makes it hard to load. Our northern team made light work of the collection as expected.
It’s not our first trip to Northumberland. In 2022 we removed a number of boats from a National Trust site and an old wooden yacht from a Northumberland marina.
