How Boatbreakers Cleared a Waterlogged Westerly GK24 from Essex
GK24 Tucked Away
At Boatbreakers, we often say that every boat has a story. This was certainly true for the Westerly GK24 we recently collected from a quiet boatyard in Essex. This particular vessel, once a proud sailing yacht, had spent years tucked away in a corner of the yard, a silent testament to forgotten dreams and the passage of time.
Her elderly owner, with the best of intentions, hadn’t been able to visit her for a number of years. Over that time, nature had begun to reclaim her. We found the GK24 sitting heavy in the water, her cockpit full to the brim with rainwater, a miniature pond reflecting the overcast sky. It was clear that, despite his fond memories, getting her back into a seaworthy condition, let alone selling her, would have been an almost insurmountable task for her owner.
Hiab Crane
The yard team at the Essex location were incredibly helpful. With a professional and understanding approach, they carefully moved several smaller boats that had accumulated around the Westerly, creating a clear path. This crucial step allowed our specialised Hiab crane to get alongside the boat. Ensuring a safe and efficient loading process. As the yard didn’t have their own lifting facilities we were reliant on our own.
Once secured, the Westerly GK24 began her final journey. We carefully transported her back to our dedicated boat scrapyard in Portsmouth. Here, she’ll be professionally processed, with all reusable parts salvaged and recycled responsibly. It’s a bittersweet end for any vessel, but knowing we’re providing a much-needed service, not just for the environment but also for owners who need a helping hand, makes it all worthwhile. Moving on the GK24 also helps the club provide more space to new owners.
