A Scenic Departure: Recycling a Macwester Rowan 22 from Topsham Quay

Topsham Quay, nestled on the beautiful Exe Estuary near Exeter, is one of the most picturesque spots for boating in Devon. However, even in such a stunning location, the practicalities of boat ownership eventually come to the fore. Recently, the Boatbreakers team successfully navigated the logistical challenge of collecting a Macwester Rowan 22 from this historic quay for professional recycling.

The Logistics of a Crowded Quay

This recovery required a fair amount of patience and coordination. Because Topsham Quay is a busy working area, the Macwester was “boxed in” by several other vessels. We had to wait for the local lifting schedule to clear. Ensuring that the surrounding boats were safely launched for the season before we could get our equipment into position.

Once the boat was accessible, we dispatched our recovery team with a specialised flatbed trailer.  The yard team hoisted the Rowan 22, and we secured her onto the trailer for the journey back to our facility.

The Reality of the “Small Yacht” Market

While we weren’t given the specific reasons for the owner’s decision, this is a scenario we see across the UK. The Macwester Rowan 22 is a solid, dependable bilge-keeler. But for an older yacht of this size, the market can be tough.

When a boat isn’t being used, the ongoing storage fees and maintenance costs quickly add up. Often, owners find that after months of trying to sell with no luck, the cost of “holding on” simply outweighs the potential sale price. Choosing to recycle is a decisive way to stop those monthly outgoings and ensure the vessel is handled responsibly.

Responsible Decommissioning

Now back at our yard, this Macwester will be processed through our salvage system. We will look to save any classic hardware that can help keep other Rowans afloat before the hull is decommissioned.
