Rescuing a Sunken Newbridge Navigator in Emsworth

Sunken boats always bring a unique set of challenges, but they also make for a memorable day on the job. Recently, the Boatbreakers team headed down to Emsworth to tackle a rather dramatic recovery: collecting a sunken Newbridge Navigator hull.

A Sinking Story in Emsworth

The trouble started when the small bilge-keeler unfortunately lost one of her bilge keels, causing her to sink right down on her mooring. Fortunately, the local harbour board stepped in early, towing the stricken vessel into a position where our team could actually get to her.

Once the tide receded, the true scale of the job came into view. We timed our arrival for low tide, positioning our Hiab lorry right on the stony slipway to lift and load the waterlogged hull for recycling.

A Crowd-Pleasing Lift (with Unexpected Help!)

Whenever a crane is operating on a slipway, it is bound to draw an audience. Naturally, the complex removal gathered quite a crowd as onlookers watched us pluck the beaten Newbridge Navigator hull off the stony ground and safely hoist it onto the back of the truck.

However, managing public safety around heavy machinery on a public slipway can be tricky. That is why we were especially thankful for the help of the local “swan man.” Not only did he help us keep the bustling area clear of pedestrians, parked cars, and curious local swans, but he also gave us invaluable local knowledge regarding the soft ground conditions for positioning our loading vehicle safely.

Thanks to his assistance and our crew’s experience, the lift went off without a hitch. The sunken hull was secured, the slipway was left clean and tidy, and another tricky maritime headache was safely resolved.
