Full Circle Salvage: Recycling a Macwester 27 Yacht in Southend, Essex
Full Circle: A Macwester 27 Returns to Boatbreakers from Essex
At Boatbreakers, we often talk about the lifecycle of a vessel, but rarely does it come as “full circle” as our recent mission to Southend, Essex. This week, we were tasked with collecting a Macwester 27, a sturdy and beloved cruiser that holds a special place in our company’s history.
A Fifteen-Year Adventure
This wasn’t just any collection. Remarkably, the owner had actually purchased this very boat from us fifteen years ago. Over the last decade and a half, he enjoyed countless hours on the water, proving exactly why the Macwester 27 is known for its rugged reliability and comfortable bilge-keel design.
Sadly, time eventually catches up with every vessel. A combination of the boat requiring significant maintenance and a change in the owner’s personal circumstances meant that the era of sailing her had come to an end. Rather than letting her sit and deteriorate, the owner made the responsible decision to call us back to handle her final journey.
The Collection: Precision at Southend
To manage the 27-foot hull, we sent our HIAB truck up to Essex. The lift was smooth and professional, navigating the local environment with ease. What struck our team immediately was the state of the vessel: she was completely stripped.
As is often the case with dedicated owners, every single recoverable item, from the cleats and winches to the interior fixtures, had already been carefully removed. While it leaves us with just the hull to process, it’s actually a outcome we love to see. It means those parts have already been earmarked for a second life on other boats, keeping the spirit of the Macwester 27 alive in the local sailing community.
Saying Goodbye
It’s always poignant to retire a boat that has provided fifteen years of joy, but we were honoured to be the ones to close the book on this story. The hull is now back at our base for eco-friendly recycling, and the boatyard space in Southend is clear.
