Clearing the Way: End-of-Life Thompson 27 Disposal in Kent

At Boatbreakers, we often see the same cycle. A project boat starts with high hopes but eventually becomes a burden to the owner. Not to mention a “fixture” in the boatyard. This was exactly the case with a Thompson 27 sailing yacht we recently collected from a sailing club in Kent.

A Boat Past the Point of No Return

The Thompson 27 had reached its definitive end-of-life stage. Stripped of all useful fittings and its engine, she was a hollow shell. For the owner, the math was simple but painful. The cost of restoration, combined with ongoing storage fees, far outweighed the vessel’s potential market value. In the world of marine salvage, this is the tipping point. Where recycling becomes the most logical and financially sound decision.

Specialised Lifting Solutions

One of the challenges with this particular collection was the lack of infrastructure. The club didn’t have its own lifting facilities. This is where the Boatbreakers team are prepared. We dispatched our specialised HIAB crane truck to Kent, allowing us to lift and remove the yacht directly from its cradle with precision and ease.

Responsible Recycling and Waste-to-Energy

Once back at our breaking facility, the processing began. We don’t just “crush” boats; we deconstruct them.

  • Metals and Woods: All remaining recyclable materials were stripped and sorted. There were a few internal brass fittings which is always a bonus to find.

  • GRP Disposal: The hull itself is destined for waste-to-energy processing, ensuring that even the fibreglass contributes to power generation.

The Boatbreakers Effect

The sailing club was so relieved to see the Thompson 27 depart that another member immediately booked us to remove their vessel! This highlights a growing trend: the ease of the boat scrapping process is often a far more positive experience than the stress of trying to sell a “project” boat that no one wants to buy.
