Abandoned Boat Cleared in Southampton

The Boat breaking team were asked by Shamrock Quay Marina (in Southampton) to remove and abandoned boat from the yard. It was a vessel that had been in and around the yard for a number of years. Her owner was long gone, the engine and internal fittings were stripped out. It was just a sad old GRP hull. After the marina had taken legal possession of the boat it was now time to remove her and clear space ready for the winter lift out.

Removing abandoned boats is important in a busy yard as every inch of space wasted costs the yard money. If half the yard was blocked up by boats that are no longer paying their fees there would be big problems. It also might lead to other owners giving up on their boats and leaving them to rot away in the corner of the yard.

For this particular boat we happened to be removing a boat close by. The marina asked us if we could also work out a plan for this old yacht. Which of course we were happy to do.

Our collection plan was simple. Turn up with the Hiab and load her for the journey back to our Boat Scrapyard. She had no fuel, flares, water, gas or fire extinguishers on board. So there was very little to worry about. Now with the ground clear we’re sure the marina will make back the money it costs to scrap within a year from a paying customer.

Sadly there wasn’t much to salvage from this boat other than a few brass fittings. These were added to our brass pile for metal recycling as they weren’t in the greatest of conditions.

If you have an old boat don’t leave it abandoned in a boat yard. It usually works our cheaper to scrap your boat than keep her in a marina for another year. So don’t leave the bill to fall on someone else we can help you escape the costly trap.
