Collecting end-of-life boats from remote locations often demands ingenuity and resilience, as shown by our recent retrieval from Bideford. The vessel, situated on a muddy bank, presented a unique challenge, requiring a combination of winching and careful trailer positioning. This operation underscored the practical skills and specialised equipment necessary for effective boat disposal.
The muddy bank, a common feature in estuaries and tidal areas, posed a significant obstacle. Traditional loading methods were impractical, necessitating a winching approach. Our team arrived equipped with a heavy-duty winch, robust cables, and a trailer designed for challenging terrains. The initial task was assessing the bank’s stability and the boat’s position.
Reduce Impact on Natural Environment
Carefully, the winch was anchored, and the cables were attached to the boat’s hull. The winching process commenced, slowly pulling the boat across the muddy bank towards the trailer. This stage required precision and constant monitoring to prevent damage to the boat and ensure a smooth transition. We also do our best to not impact the natural environment that the boat is in.
The trailer, positioned strategically at the top of the slipway, was then used to receive the boat. The winching continued, gradually pulling the vessel up onto the trailer’s bed. The muddy conditions added complexity, requiring constant adjustments and careful control. The trailer’s robust construction and adjustable supports proved invaluable in accommodating the boat’s shape and weight.
Safely Away
Once secured on the trailer, the journey back to our scrapping facility began. The road conditions in Bideford, transitioning from rural lanes to main roads, required careful driving and constant monitoring of the load. The boat, now secure, was transported back for dismantling and recycling. We were relieved to have the boat loaded safely and away form her former position. Our team had spent a long time planning the removal to avoid being stuck in the mud.
