Westerly Centaur Caught in a Storm

The boat breaking team were on the doorstep of Portchester Castle to collect a scrap Westerly Centaur.

Every winter we will have calls to deal with storm damaged boats. For those brave souls who want to keep sailing through the winter months they just have to hope their moorings hold. But more often than not the adverse conditions can claims victims. It only takes a loose link in a chain for a boat to be set free from safety.

Our latest storm damaged boat was a Westerly Centaur that had based her bow and only just stayed afloat. After the storm has subsided her owner had her pulled out of the water and stored in the local sailing club. It was there that a surveyor made the decision that she was a write off.

Once we had the job confirmed to collect the Westerly Centaur our team went to visit. The aim of the visit was to ascertain what was worth saving from her. We immediately noted the sprayhood, cooker and engine. As the boat was an up together boat before the accident all of the items on board were perfectly useable. Our team agreed with the bosun of the club that once we had removed the items we had highlighted that members could also take their pick. We had noticed that there were a number of Centaurs in the club. So we are sure that those bits will go to good use.

It’s a shame to see a nice boat like this having to be scrapped. But at least everything that could be saved had been and most importantly nobody was hurt when the damage was caused.
