Achilles 24 Collected from Aberaeron Yacht Club (West Wales)

Achilles 24 in West Wales
Our marine recycling team were in West Wales this week to collect an Achilles 24. The yacht had been sat in a Yacht club car park in Aberaeron. Her owner wanted to step away from boating and with no luck selling he didn’t want the boat to linger on and keep costing him storage fees. He had decided that it was time to move the boat on and spend that money on something else.
The marine recycling team advised him that they would recommend he removed some of the valuable items from the boat. This way he could sell them himself and recoup some of the scrap costs. We believe there was a decent Tohatsu outboard and some new sails on board. So this should hopefully achieve at least £1,000.
No Lifting Facilities
At the yacht club there were no lifting facilities on site. This meant that we would have had to wait for the Achilles 24 to be lifted when they have a lift in day. The problem with this is that there is usually a big list of boats that need lifting. Plus it’s very vulnerable to being cancelled due to weather conditions. Thankfully the owner wanted to avoid this. He opted for the slightly more expensive option for us to send our Hiab truck.
The Hiab truck has the luxury of her own crane arm. So it made light work of turning up to the boat a loading her. Ultimately the owner chose peace of mind and efficiency over waiting to try and save some money. By the time he has sold some of the salvaged items from the boat he should have made a big chunk of the bill back anyway.

Finally if you have an old boat like the Achilles 24 that is costing you storage fees then get in contact. Just fill in the Scrap Calculator and our team will work out the best price to collect and scrap the boat.

Without Luke we would be lost, he runs the office, keeps us organised and is like a terrier and never lets a tricky boat disposal job go un-photographed or Tweeted about.
He also manages all of our enquiries passing them to whoever in the team is the best suited to deal with it. We are teaching Luke how to drive a motorboat or sail a yacht so while he’s learning we suggest you keep out of the Solent!
When he’s not at work he’s a massive football fan (his Dad used to play for Portsmouth FC years ago) and seems to know everything there is to know about any player, anywhere. Next time you ring and he answers, think of a tricky football trivia question and ask him

This week the Boatbreakers team hit the road and headed for Essex to dispose of an old wooden yacht that was sitting in a couple's garden. The boat's position in the orchard area of the garden meant getting a hi-ab or any heavy lifting gear was out of the question.

Not every boat that we scrap is in a boat yard. More often they are in people's gardens, garages or driveways.
